200 street beggars and almajiris have been arrested by the Kano State Government for allegedly violating the law banning street begging in the state.
This was made known to newsmen by the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr Zahra’u Muhammad-Umar, on Monday.
Muhammad-Umar said the ministry arrested the beggars and almajiris in the Kano metropolis and among them 60 per cent were women, children and men, and 30 per cent almajiris.
She explained that some of those arrested sleep under the bridge while some on the streets and that most of them are from Kaduna, Bauchi, Borno and Yobe, while only a few are from Kano.
“It is very dangerous to leave them on the streets without knowing their parents,” she said assuring that the government will continue to arrest them to ensure sanity and rid the streets of all forms of crimes.
She said that those arrested from other states would be sent back to their states on March 16, and would be handed over to their parents.
The commissioner said the state would provide some assistance so that the almajiris could go back to school.
