The Super Eagles of Nigeria secured a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Lesotho at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Friday, keeping their World Cup qualification hopes alive. Despite dominating possession, the West Africans struggled to find their rhythm and were fortunate to leave with all three points.

After a goalless first half, Nigeria broke the deadlock 10 minutes into the second period when captain William Troost-Ekong calmly converted from the penalty spot. The visitors came close to doubling their lead moments later, but Victor Osimhen was denied twice by the woodwork as Lesotho’s defence continued to hold firm.

Substitute Akor Adams finally gave Nigeria breathing space with a well-taken low strike in the 80th minute, marking a dream debut for the forward. However, Lesotho pulled one back just three minutes later when Hlompho Kalake capitalized on goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali’s error to set up a tense finale. A late mix-up between Nwabali and Semi Ajayi nearly cost the Super Eagles, but the hosts’ effort went narrowly wide.

With the win, Nigeria remain third in Group C, three points behind leaders Benin Republic, who defeated Rwanda earlier in the evening to reach 17 points. The Super Eagles will now face Benin at home on Tuesday in a crucial fixture that could reshape the group standings.

For Nigeria to top the table, they must beat Benin by at least three goals and hope Rwanda holds second-placed South Africa to a draw. With Group C heading for a thrilling finish, every point — and every goal — will count in the race to secure a spot at the global tournament.
