The Yaba Magistrate court in Lagos witnessed the trial of Mr Babatunde Lukman who was convicted for stealing bread, wine, soap and toothpaste from a store. Mr Babatunde resides on the Island and has pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor, Sergeant Olaluwoye Module said before the court the Mr Babatunde committed the offence on the 16th of March at around 4pm at Trolleys super store which is at Yaba. She stated further that he stole 4 bottles of Black Label wine which is worth N31,200, 1 packet of Dettol soap worth N300, 6 pieces of Sensodyne toothpaste valued at N5,100 and 1 loaf of N300 bread.

The Manager of the store, Mr Abimbola Taiwo noticed the theft via a closed-circuit television camera and immediately called the police. Mr Taiwo reported that Mr Babatunde was pretending to be shopping while stuffing the stolen goods into his jacket. On getting to the counter, he only paid for a bowl of ice cream.

The action of Mr Babatunde has contravened section 257 of the criminal Laws of Lagos State and is punishable with with three year jail term.

The Chief Magistrate, Oghare Oluwatoyin adjourned the case until June 26 but granted the defendant bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum. The sureties should be gainfully employed and should posses an evidence of tax payment over the last 3 years.
