Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti has been arraigned before Magistrate Adeola Olatunbosun of a Magistrate’s Court in the Yaba area of Lagos State on Tuesday, in relation to an assault case.
Seun Kuti was charged with assaulting a police officer, which is an offense contrary to Section 356 of the Nigerian Criminal Code Act.
During the court proceedings, the police prosecutor, S. A Adebese, requested the court to remand the defendant for 21 days, pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.
However, Seun Kuti’s counsel, led by Femi Falana, SAN, pleaded with the court not to remand his client, as he claimed to be unaware of the remand application.
It can be recalled that a viral video surfaced on Saturday, showing Seun Kuti allegedly assaulting a police officer on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos State.
In response to the incident, Kuti voluntarily turned himself in at the Lagos State Police Command, Ikeja on Monday, following an order for his arrest by the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba.
Subsequently, he was transferred to the state’s Criminal Investigation Department at Panti, Lagos.
