Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has expressed his willingness to support Peter Obi if the party selects him as its candidate for the 2027 elections. In a recent interview with BBC Hausa Service, Atiku stated, “If the PDP decides to zone the presidential ticket to the South-East and Peter Obi is chosen, I will readily offer my support.”
Atiku reiterated his commitment to the party’s decisions, emphasizing that he only contested the 2023 presidential ticket because it was open to all members. He affirmed his support for the party’s choice if it zones the ticket to the South-East in 2027.
Furthermore, Atiku mentioned the possibility of a merger between the PDP and the Labour Party, suggesting that a unified front could be beneficial for the upcoming elections. He noted that his recent meetings with Obi and other political figures might hint at a potential alliance.
Addressing speculations about a merger, Atiku said, “Yes, it’s very much possible. We can merge to achieve a common goal. Nothing can stop it if we wish to achieve that.”
Regarding his political future, Atiku stated, “My age doesn’t stop the young ones from testing their fate. Everyone, irrespective of age, is allowed to aspire politically.” He also clarified that his involvement in politics is driven by a commitment to improving Nigeria.
Last week, Obi held private meetings with Atiku and other PDP leaders in Abuja, fueling rumors of a potential coalition for the 2027 elections. Obi also met separately with former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido and former Senate President Bukola Saraki, further igniting speculation about a unified opposition.
Obi, who left the PDP in 2022 to run as the Labour Party’s candidate, finished third in the February 2023 presidential election, behind Atiku and the winner, Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Atiku has attributed his loss to Obi’s departure from the PDP, suggesting that a combined vote tally could have defeated Tinubu.
The recent meetings marked the first public interaction between Obi and Atiku since the election, sparking discussions about a potential political alliance aimed at the 2027 elections.
