Augustine Eguavoen has announced his decision to step down as interim coach of Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, following the completion of his two-match assignment. The coach revealed this decision on Tuesday after leading the team to a hard-fought draw against Rwanda.
Eguavoen had only taken up the role a few days prior, following Bruno Labbadia’s refusal of the Nigerian Football Federation’s (NFF) offer. In his brief tenure, Eguavoen made an impressive start, securing a commanding 3-0 victory against Benin Republic in Uyo last weekend, showcasing his ability to guide the team effectively in crucial moments.
Speaking on his decision, Eguavoen clarified that he was only appointed for two matches and had fulfilled that mandate. He expressed his gratitude to the players and the NFF for their support, noting their discipline and hard work as key factors in the team’s performances. He also praised the leadership for trusting him with the responsibility.
While Eguavoen’s stint ends with the draw against Rwanda, he hinted at his willingness to stay close to the team, particularly with the upcoming match against Libya. Although he wasn’t assigned to coach that match, he expressed a desire to offer insights and support to ensure the Super Eagles’ success in the future.
Reflecting on the team’s potential, Eguavoen remained optimistic, emphasizing the unity and fighting spirit displayed by the players. According to him, Nigeria’s football future looks promising, especially if the team continues to build on the momentum of recent performances.
