South African authorities have opened an investigation into the sudden death of Nigerian content creator Nwobu Odera, who passed away on Sunday after reported complications linked to high blood pressure. His death has raised concerns after a close companion shared details of his health struggles in a viral video.
According to his companion, known as Daddy Billy, Odera first suffered a serious health scare three days before his death. He said Odera’s heart began racing abnormally, prompting an urgent visit to a pharmacy where his blood pressure was measured at 171. The pharmacist reportedly warned that any delay could have resulted in a stroke, after which Odera was given medication that briefly stabilised him.
Billy explained that on Sunday, Odera went out again but may have missed his blood pressure medication. He said Odera later complained of tiredness and weakness before friends later received a distress call saying he could no longer move. Because of South Africa’s medical protocols, they were unable to transport him themselves and waited for an ambulance, which arrived and confirmed him dead.
He added that South African law requires an autopsy for young individuals who die outside a hospital or without a major diagnosed illness. Investigators have therefore insisted on conducting a post-mortem examination, with results expected within a few days. Billy also addressed rumours online, stressing that the death was not a prank and that the autopsy results would be made public.
His death was confirmed through Odera’s manager. This comes months after the death of another Nigerian content creator, Monalisa Stephen, who passed away in Lagos in May after health complications involving low blood sugar and internal bleeding.
