CAF shifts tournament’s date for the sake of Ramadan

With the African nations cup intially set to begin on June 13 and run through till July 15. The emergency comittee of the CAF has set a circular to its associate members confirming the shift in date after several consultations held with Muslim participating nations.

The holy month of Ramadan is scheduled to begin on the evening of May 5 and will end around June 4. Observers fast during daylight hours over this period, which can have an effect on the performance of athletes.

The 24-team competition will now kick-off on June 21 and run through to the final on July 19.

According to media reports, a formal request was made for the move by a number of mainly Muslim North African nations, including Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria, who have all already sealed qualifications. The postponement as said to be given to allow players rest well after the activities of the holy month.
