In a swift turn of events, the Department of State Services (DSS) has charged suspended Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele to court, just six hours after a Federal High Court ordered his release or arraignment. The spokesperson for the DSS, Dr. Peter Afunanya, confirmed this development in a statement released on Thursday night. However, specific details regarding the charges and the court where the case is pending were not disclosed.
According to Afunanya, the court order issued on July 13, 2023, compelled the DSS to take action. He mentioned that back in 2022, the DSS had sought a court order to detain Emefiele in relation to a criminal investigation. Although Emefiele had obtained a restraining order from an FCT High Court, the DSS apprehended him in June 2023 based on new suspected criminal infractions or information, one of which has led to his current prosecution.
The DSS emphasized its commitment to professionalism, justice, and fairness in handling the matter, as well as fulfilling its duties within the boundaries of the law.
