China has called on the international community to respect Nigeria’s sovereignty, following recent threats by the United States to take military action against the country. The Chinese government reaffirmed its strong support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration, praising Nigeria for pursuing a development path suited to its own national realities.
In a statement released on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ website, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Mao Ning, said during a press briefing in Beijing on Tuesday that China stands firmly against any form of interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs.
“As Nigeria’s strategic partner, China opposes any attempt by foreign powers to use religion or human rights as an excuse to interfere, impose sanctions, or issue military threats,” Mao stated.
The comments come after U.S. President Donald Trump accused Nigeria of allowing the persecution of Christians and warned that the U.S. military could intervene if the alleged killings continue. His remarks have drawn widespread reactions from global leaders and security analysts.
China’s position underscores its long-standing policy of non-interference and support for African nations’ sovereignty. The statement also signals Beijing’s growing diplomatic alignment with Abuja amid heightened international tensions following Trump’s comments.
