Cholera Outbreak Claims 29 Lives in Lagos, 579 Cases Reported in Two Weeks

The Lagos State Ministry of Health has confirmed 29 deaths and 579 suspected cases since a cholera outbreak began two weeks ago.

During a press briefing on Monday, Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, attributed the high death rate to patients arriving at hospitals too late or being brought in already deceased.

Abayomi reassured the public that no cases have been reported in schools. “In the past two weeks, we have recorded 29 deaths and 579 suspected cholera cases. The fatalities occurred because patients were presented too late for resuscitation,” he stated.

On June 11, 2024, Abayomi issued a warning about an excess of severe gastroenteritis cases in the state. He noted that communities in Eti-Osa, Lagos Island, Ikorodu, and Kosofe Local Government Areas have reported numerous severe gastroenteritis cases.

The Health Ministry continues to monitor the situation closely and urges the public to seek immediate medical attention if symptoms occur.
