Veteran journalist and former presidential aspirant, Dele Momodu, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), alleging that the party has been overtaken by undemocratic interests. His resignation was conveyed in a letter dated July 17, 2025, and addressed to the PDP chairman in Ward 4, Ihievbe, Owan East Local Government Area of Edo State.

In the letter, Momodu said his decision takes immediate effect, describing the move as necessary to protect democratic values. “My reason is simple and straightforward. Our party has been unarguably hijacked by antidemocratic forces, from within and outside, in broad daylight,” he wrote.

Momodu, who vied for the PDP presidential ticket in the 2023 elections, described the current state of the party as a “carcass” controlled by those undermining internal democracy. He said it was only honourable to exit the party now and align with the emerging coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

“It is, therefore, honourable to abandon the carcass of the party to them while the majority of us earnestly sign up with the new coalition party known as the African Democratic Congress,” Momodu stated. He also thanked supporters and party faithful who stood by him during his time in the PDP.

His resignation adds to a growing list of defections and discontent within the PDP in recent months, as many members voice concerns over lack of internal democracy, imposition of candidates, and leadership struggles that continue to rock the party.
