The Edo State Government has approved ₦1 billion in soft loans for market women to help grow their businesses and improve their livelihoods. This was announced by the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Eugenia Abdallah, during a press conference in Benin City. She said the initiative is part of the government’s SHINE Agenda, which focuses on empowering women at the grassroots level to strengthen their roles in the state’s economy.

Abdallah explained that about 54,000 women will benefit from training in entrepreneurship, microfinance, and skills development. She praised Governor Monday Okpebholo for his dedication to women’s empowerment and noted that 35% of the state’s cabinet members are women. According to her, this shows that the administration is not only making promises but also taking action to promote inclusive governance.

The commissioner also said that the Ministry of Women Affairs has increased efforts to support vulnerable groups through various social protection programmes. She highlighted that the ministry has provided shelter and rehabilitation for trafficked women, rape survivors, and victims of domestic violence, while also ensuring that their children are properly cared for.

Abdallah further revealed that the Uromi and Igarra Skills Acquisition Centres have been revitalised, producing over 140 graduates in 2025. She added that the Evbuomodu Centre is being upgraded in partnership with the Edo State Skills Development Agency to create more training opportunities for women and youths.

She expressed gratitude to Governor Okpebholo and the Office of the Edo First Lady for their continued support. Abdallah concluded by saying that the state is working towards a future where every woman and child can live with dignity, contribute meaningfully to society, and reach their full potential.
