The Federal Government has officially requested the withdrawal of the ‘illegal possession of firearms’ case that it previously filed against the suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele. The application was submitted at the Federal High Court located in Lagos.

During the court session, Mohammed Abubakar, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) at the Federal Ministry of Justice, informed Justice Nicholas Oweibo that this decision comes as a direct outcome of new findings arising from further investigations carried out by the government.

To provide clarity and a way forward, Justice Oweibo has scheduled a crucial ruling on the application, which is set to take place on Thursday, August 17, 2023.

However, the plot thickens. Following the withdrawal application, fresh developments have emerged. In an exclusive post-session interview with journalists, the DPP disclosed that a brand-new set of charges, totaling 20 counts, has been lodged against the suspended CBN governor. These charges will be presented at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court.
