Juventus Sacks Allegri Following Italian Cup Victory Meltdown

Juventus announced on Friday the dismissal of Massimiliano Allegri after his outburst during the team’s midweek Italian Cup win. The club cited behavior “incompatible with its values” during and after the final as the reason for his sacking.

In their 15th Italian Cup victory on Wednesday, Allegri erupted in anger, resulting in his ejection from the game after a tirade at match officials.

He further displayed his frustration by dismissively waving off sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli during the post-match celebrations. Allegri is also accused of physically threatening the chief editor of Tuttosport before the post-match press conference.

Speculation had already been rife that Juventus would replace Allegri with Bologna coach Thiago Motta in the summer, but the club decided to act immediately with two matches left in the season.

Juventus currently sits fourth in Serie A, having garnered just 15 points in their last 15 league games. They are set to play Bologna on Monday night, both teams having already qualified for next season’s revamped Champions League, with 67 points each.

The Turin club did not clarify if Allegri’s dismissal was with just cause, a detail that could impact whether they owe him the remaining year of his contract, valued at around seven million euros before bonuses.

The Italian Football Federation’s disciplinary tribunal has also launched an investigation into Allegri’s conduct. On Thursday, he received an automatic two-match ban in the cup for his red card, with the potential for further sanctions.
