A 29-year-old Kaduna based woman, Rahma Yakubu, brought her husband, Jibril Bajeh to a Sharia Court based in Magajin Gari, Kaduna on Wednesday. The said issue was a debate over the paternity of their three-year-old son, Abdulhalim.
Mrs Yakubu presented her case before the court saying that Mr Bajeh abandoned her when her when she was about eight months pregnant due to a misunderstanding that ensued between them.
She told the court that after Bajeh cut all forms of communication, she and her newborn baby had to put up with her brother. She made the following statement saying,
“My mother called him to inform him about my delivery and he told her that the child wasn’t his until he confirmed it through a DNA test,” she told the court.
Rahma alleged that their parents had also tried to resolve the matter, asking the husband to agree to take responsibility of the child’s welfare, pending the outcome of the paternity test.
The plaintiff futher siad that since Mr Jibril had once divorced his wife openly, the court should also do the same and bring both parties to sign the necessary papers.
In defence, Mr Jibril claimed to have divorced his wife in 2015 over infidelity which is the main reason he denied the child in the first place.
The Judge, Malam Musa Sa’ad-Goma, said that the court shall prepare all necessary documents and file a divorce certificate to the complainant.”
