A 77 year old man, Lawal Izala has been sentenced to 18 months imprisonment by a Court in Kastina State for insulting President Muhammadu Buhari and Katsina State Governor, Aminu Masari.
Mr. Lawal Izala reckons that he spoke out of anger when he visited his village and found out that bandits had killed his family members.
Lawal’s brother was slaughtered by unknown men because of 15 cows, he insulted Buhari and Gov. Masari for their failure to bring those that killed his brother to book
Instead of investigating and arresting his brothers murderer, the Nigerian police did not hesitate to arrest him for insulting Buhari, a president elected in a democracy under a constitution that stipulates freedom of speech.
The court later found Izala guilty of two-count charges of inciting violence and disrespect for civil authorities.
