Lagos Decides: Sanwo-Olu secures second term as Governor in landslide victory


Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos State, was declared the winner of the state’s governorship election on March 18 by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
In the election, Sanwo-Olu of the All Progressives Congress won 19 of the state’s 20 local government areas.

Professor Adenike Oladeji, the Returning Officer for the Governorship and House of Assembly elections in Lagos State, made the declaration in the early hours of Monday, March 20.

Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of the Labour Party, who received 312,329 votes, was Sanwo-Olu’s closest competitor. Olajide Adeniran of the People’s Democratic Party received 62,449 votes. Sanwo-Olu received 762,134 votes.

The state has 7,060,195 registered voters, but the number of accredited voters for the election was 1,182,620.

Rhodes-Vivour won only one LG, Amuwo-Odofin, while the incumbent governor won 19 of the 20 LGAs.

“I hereby declare that Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, having satisfied the requirements of the law by having 25% of the total of the LGAs of the states and also having the highest number of votes cast and meeting the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner,” Oladiji, who is also the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, said in announcing the election’s outcome.
