Liverpool have announced that midfielder Thiago Alcantara has tested positive for coronavirus.
The Spain international joined the club from Bayern Munich earlier this month in a deal worth £25million.
The 29-year-old has made just one appearance for the club so far when he came on as a substitute in Liverpool’s 2-0 win against Chelsea.
A Liverpool statement read: “Thiago Alcantara has tested positive for Covid-19 and is currently self-isolating according to the necessary guidelines.
“The club has, and will continue to follow, all protocols relating to Covid-19 and Thiago will remain in self-isolation for the required period of time.”
The Spain international was in line to start against Arsenal on Monday night, a game they went on to win 3-1, but was a notable omission from the squad.
Manager Jurgen Klopp admitted after the match that the midfielder would miss this weekend’s trip to Aston Villa, as well as sitting out the Carabao Cup tie against Arsenal in two days’ time.
