Man arraigned for allegedly stealing N21 million from a Catholic Church in Lagos

A 37-year-old man, Nwafor Onyebuchi, has been arraigned before a Badagry Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly stealing N21 million from Saint Patrick Catholic Church in Alaba, Ojo area of Lagos on December 21, 2022.

Onyebuchi is facing a three-count charge of stealing, breach of public peace, and conspiracy.

According to the prosecutor, Insp Ayodele Adeosun, the defendant converted the money, which was meant for the development of the church, to his personal use. Adeosun further stated that the defendant also acted in a way that could breach the peace of the church.

Onyebuchi, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The offences contravene Sections 287, 168, and 307 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Magistrate T. A Popoola granted the defendant bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in like sum.

Popoola ordered that one of the sureties must be related to the defendant, while both sureties should show evidence of three years tax payment to Lagos State Government.

The case has been adjourned until June 5 for mention.
