Manchester United Sack Erik ten Hag After Poor Season Start

Manchester United have parted ways with manager Erik ten Hag following the club’s underwhelming performance this season, the club confirmed on Monday. The decision comes after United fell to 14th place in the Premier League table, suffering their fourth defeat in nine league matches with a loss to West Ham. The team has managed only one win in their last eight matches across all competitions.

The club’s official statement expressed gratitude to Ten Hag, who was appointed in April 2022. During his tenure, he led United to two domestic titles, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024. “We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done and wish him the best in his future endeavors,” the statement added.

Ruud van Nistelrooy, a former Manchester United striker and Ten Hag’s assistant since July, has been named interim manager while the club searches for a permanent replacement. Ten Hag’s departure follows the club’s worst start to a league campaign since the 1989/90 season, leaving his position under scrutiny.

Despite being awarded a contract extension until June 2026 after United’s surprising FA Cup victory over Manchester City in May, Ten Hag struggled to resolve ongoing issues from the previous season. While his tenure saw United claim two trophies and finish third in the Premier League during his debut season, the recent downturn in form ultimately led to his dismissal.
