In a case involving allegations of attempted rape, assault, and coercive and controlling behavior, all charges against Mason Greenwood have been dropped.

After the allegations were made public, the Manchester United forward was given an indefinite suspension by the Premier League club. He was initially detained in January 2022 before being granted bail.

Prosecutors brought charges against him after he was detained once more for violating the terms of his bail.

Greenwood has now been cleared of all charges, and in November, it was made public that a court date had been set for February 2023.

The following is a statement from Head of Public Protection for Greater Manchester Police, Chief Superintendent Michaela Kerr: The CPS has ended criminal proceedings against a 21-year-old man today, Thursday, February 2, 2023, in connection with an investigation that began in January 2022.

“Given the significant media coverage of this case, it is only fair that we announce that the 21-year-old man no longer faces criminal proceedings in connection with this. He had been arrested and charged in connection with an investigation that began in January 2022.

“The investigation team has remained in constant communication with the legal team, providing any relevant updates. As a result, the team understands why the proceedings have been halted at this point and that this decision was not made lightly.

“We have made the decision not to make any further comments on it, despite the fact that the public and the media are interested in this case.

“However, I would like to take this opportunity to reaffirm GMP’s commitment to investigating allegations of violence against women and girls and assisting those affected, regardless of their circumstances, during a potentially difficult and distressing time.

“The force is consistently utilizing tools made available by the criminal justice system to keep people safe and care for victims, and an ever-increasing number of officers are receiving specialist training.

“Please do not let this case discourage you from seeking assistance if you believe you are or might be a victim.”
