The constitutional council of Mauritania confirmed Mohamed Ould Ghazouami as the contry’s president elect. The council stated that the new president would serve a five year term and he would be inaugurated on the 1st of August.

Mohamed Ould Ghazouani is a 62 year old retired general. Before he was chosen to succeed the outgoing president, he served as the defense minister. As released by the country’s electoral commission, he won the June 22 election with a total of 52 percentage of votes.

The confirmation by the constitutional council paves way for Mauritania’s first peaceful transfer of power since its independence in 1960. Former president of the country was barred from seeking a third term by the constitution of Mauritania, he then hand picked his successor in Mohamed Ould.

After results have been confirmed by the constitutional council and Ghazouani ‘s victory asserted, the opposition party challenged his victory but it was rather too late.
