David Oyelowo – you remember him- the Nigerian actor, who played the key role of Martin Luther King in the well-received civil rights film- “SELMA”
In “GRINGO”, Oyelowo plays a Nigerian-born, American businessmen, Harold Soyinka. Critics say the film should have been labelled just “trash” were it not for Oyelowo’s acting.
The movie opens with Soyinka being sent by his crooked bosses to seal a deal with equally crooked Mexican businessmen – then follows the inevitable procession of cartel mobsters, summary executions and double-dealing Mexican policemen. Although “trashy”, Oyelowo’s playing Soyinka rescues it with what was described as “a sweet and fabulously humourous acting” Yes, David Oyelowo appears to have joined a new world
of western comedy.
The Black Panther
Black Panther is one of the only big Hollywood movies thus-far this year that didn’t need China to save face. With $1.316 billion worldwide sales thus far, Black Panther is the year’s biggest global grosser by a longshot.
Disney CEO Bob Iger, which made the film, says he pushed for Black Panther to get made.
“I badly wanted this movie. To have a black director, a black producer, a black cast. Look around. It means something. … On the business side, there is a case to be made for your product reflecting the world you’re trying to do business in. But of course, there’s also an ethical side.
