The Federal Government on Monday confirmed the receipt of the sum of $311.7 million from the United State Government and the Bailiwick of Jersey as part of the money looted and stashed away by former Nigerian leader, Gen. Sani Abacha.

Gen Abacha ruled Nigeria from 1993 until his death in 1998. Under a repatriation agreement the fund is to be spent on infrastructure projects.

The anti corruption agency, Transparency International, estimates he stole as much as $5bn during his time in office.

Switzerland is also believed to have returned around $1bn over the last decade.
