Nigerian students give MultiChoice 7-day ultimatum to reverse planned DSTV, GOTV subscription hike

The National Association of Nigerian Students in the South-west Zone has given MultiChoice Nigeria a seven-day ultimatum to reverse its decision to increase subscription rates for DSTV and GOTV.

The announcement was made by the student association in a statement signed by its Coordinator, Adejuwon Olatunji, Deputy Coordinator, Alao John, and Public Relations Officer, Opeoluwa Awoyinfa on Tuesday.

MultiChoice had earlier informed its subscribers of a 17% upward review of prices for DSTV and GOTV packages via text messages. The new rates are expected to take effect on May 1, 2023.

The company stated that the increase was due to rising business operational costs.

In opposition to the subscription hike, NANS said that MultiChoice was exploiting Nigerians without considering their standard of living. It also called for a “pay-as-you-view” system to be implemented.

According to NANS, Nigeria constitutes over 45% of MultiChoice’s global market share, and the student association urged President Muhammadu Buhari and the Minister of Communication to break the company’s sporting right and provide an alternative service provider in the country.

NANS gave MultiChoice a seven-day ultimatum to reverse the planned tariff increment and implement the pay-as-you-view system, or face the possibility of having all DSTV offices locked up until their demands are met.
