Nigerians trapped in Sudan amid escalating violence

The Nigerian government is working towards a safe evacuation plan for its citizens trapped in Sudan, according to Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Muhammadu Buhari.

This follows escalating violence between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Force, which has so far claimed more than 400 lives and left thousands injured.

A number of civilians have also been displaced as the violence enters its fifteenth day.

The Nigerian Embassy in Khartoum has told Nigerian students to disregard a call from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) to convene at three specific locations for evacuation.

Several countries, including the UK, France and Germany, have already begun evacuating their citizens. Internet connectivity has reportedly collapsed across the country, hampering coordination of aid.
