The Kwara State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has confirmed the capture of a fraudster, identified as Babatunde Adekunle, for engaging in an ATM card swapping scheme.
The criminal successfully replaced the Automated Teller Machine card of an elderly man, subsequently exploiting the card to withdraw a staggering sum of N1.8 million from the victim’s account.
During a press conference, Umar Mohammed, the Commandant of the NSCDC in the state, paraded Babatunde Adekunle alongside six other suspects. These individuals were apprehended while transporting two trucks laden with railway slippers in Oloru, situated in the Moro Local Government Area of Kwara State.
Umar Mohammed revealed that Babatunde Adekunle, a 41-year-old suspect, skillfully swapped his own ATM card with that of an unsuspecting elderly man at an ATM point within a bank located in Ilorin. After successfully executing the swap, Adekunle shamelessly proceeded to withdraw a substantial amount of N1.8 million from the victim’s bank account. As soon as the incident was reported, the commandant promptly directed the tracking unit to bring the criminal to justice.
The other suspects apprehended in possession of two trucks filled with railway slippers were identified as Yunusa Bello (41), Sanni Taminu (35), Sanusi Lawal (25), Alhaji Makeri (33), Lukman Sanni (32), and Olabode Johnson (41).
Commandant Umar expressed his gratitude to the state government, traditional rulers, and the general populace of Kwara State for their unwavering support. He reassured the public that the NSCDC would continue to collaborate with other law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety and security of the state’s residents and their belongings.
