Dr. Ayo Ojediran, a respected lecturer within Obafemi Awolowo University’s Faculty of Education in Ile-Ife, Osun State, tragically passed away after reportedly collapsing in his office.
Sources indicate that the lecturer was swiftly taken to the university’s clinic upon collapsing on Tuesday. Regrettably, despite immediate attention, he couldn’t be revived.
Addressing the incident, Victor Adesokan, President of the Faculty of Education Students Association of Nigeria, expressed his shock, highlighting that he had been in the company of Dr. Ojediran the evening before his untimely demise.
Describing the deceased as a paternal figure, Adesokan revealed that Dr. Ojediran had complained of a severe headache and exhibited visible signs of fatigue prior to his passing.
Reflecting on the broader context, Adesokan emphasized the excessive workload faced by lecturers, stressing the urgent need for additional faculty members to alleviate the strain. He lamented the overwhelming responsibilities placed on individual lecturers, citing an imbalance in workload distribution.
Adesokan also drew attention to the concerning frequency of faculty members’ deaths, urging both the government and the school administration to take action to safeguard the well-being of the university’s educators.
As of the time of reporting, there hasn’t been an official statement from the OAU management regarding the unfortunate passing of the lecturer. The sudden loss of Dr. Ojediran has cast a pall of sorrow over the Faculty of Education, prompting calls for immediate measures to address the strenuous working conditions faced by the university’s academic staff.
