OAU final year student beaten to death over alleged phone theft

A final year undergraduate of Obafemi Awolowo College, Ile-Ife, Okoli Ahize, has been supposedly pounded into the ground by a horde in the establishment over supposed telephone theft.

It was reported that the unfortunate incident occurred on Monday at the institution’s Awolowo Hall of Residence.

It was believed that the deceased student was enrolled in Part 5 of the Department of Civil Engineering.

In a recent statement, Mr. Abiodun Olarewaju, the institution’s Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident.

He noticed that the college the board denounced the activity and had set up a board to examine the matter.

The incident that resulted in the death of a Part 5 student at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, has been strongly condemned by the university’s administration.

“The student died as a result of a mob action based on the claim that he stole a phone, according to preliminary investigation.

Olarewaju stated, “The Vice Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Bamire, has set up a committee to unravel the circumstances that led to this incident. Saddened by this ugly development, which he described as unfortunate.”

Olayiwola Festus, President of the Students’ Union, also confirmed the incident, describing it as inhumane and promising justice.

“I regret to announce the death of a Part 5 student who was attacked during a mob fight yesterday (Monday) at Awo Hall. In a statement, the union leader said, “The student was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Emergency Medicine Department of OAU Teaching Hospital this afternoon.”

He mentioned that people who were suspected of being involved in the assault of the deceased were being investigated and arrested for possible future legal action.

He went on to say, “Our union does not support mob action, and justice needs to be served in this incident.”

“Prays that God will grant us the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss,” the university’s administration said in a statement, offering its condolences to the deceased parents, staff, and students.

The incident has been met with condemnation from some of the school’s students and alumni.
