Students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, under the Great Ife Students’ Union, have rejected the recent hike in tuition and hostel accommodation fees announced by the university management. The students expressed their displeasure over the 50% and 100% increases in tuition and accommodation fees respectively. In a statement released on Sunday, the union condemned the sudden decision, calling it drastic and unfair.
The statement, signed by the union leaders, including President Omoboriowo Damilola Isaac, Secretary General Babatimehin Kinfeosi Joy, and PRO Aka Daniel’s E., revealed that the university management informed the students of the increment during an emergency meeting. The union emphasized their firm opposition to what they described as exploitation, stating that they prioritize the well-being of the students and will take steps to ensure their interests are protected.
The Great Ife Students’ Union assured the student body that they are actively engaging with the university’s Division of Students’ Affairs (DSA) to reverse the fee increase. They reaffirmed their commitment to resist any form of exploitation and vowed to continue advocating for the reversal of the increment in order to prevent further financial strain on the students.
