The Osun State House of Assembly unanimously approved a bill that will revert the state’s name from the “State of Osun” back to its original designation of “Osun State.” The proposed change, initially introduced in 2012 by former Governor Rauf Aregbesola, has received widespread support from the Assembly.
During the plenary session on Monday, the bill, officially titled the “Osun State Anthem, Crest and Flag Amendment Bill 2023,” successfully passed its third reading. Mr. Adewale Egbedun, the Speaker of the Assembly, announced that the bill would be sent to the Governor for final approval and assent.
Upon the Governor’s endorsement, the new bill will supersede the previously enacted “Osun Anthem, Crest and Flag Bill 2012.” In addition to restoring the state’s name, the revised legislation will also bring changes to the state’s flag and crest. The new flag and crest will prominently feature the Nigerian flag and the Nigerian Coat of Arms.
It is worth noting that the State Anthem, as established by the previous bill, will be retained and preserved under the new legislation, ensuring continuity in the state’s identity and cultural heritage.
