The Oyomesi, traditional kingmakers in Oyo, have warned Governor Seyi Makinde of potential legal action following his allegations of bribery in the selection of the new Alaafin. They argue that the governor’s remarks are defamatory and demand that he provide evidence to support his claims. The Oyomesi assert that the accusations have tarnished their reputation and integrity.
Governor Makinde recently appointed Prince Abimbola Owoade as the new Alaafin, filling the position after a two-year vacancy following Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III’s passing in 2022. During the coronation, Makinde warned that anyone involved in bribery during the selection process would face legal consequences unless forgiven by the new Alaafin. This statement has not been well-received by the Oyomesi, who believe it undermines their role and credibility.
In a letter addressed to the governor, the Oyomesi, through their legal representative, Adekunle Sobaloju, urged him to cease making public statements that question their integrity. They emphasized that any evidence of wrongdoing should be presented in court rather than in the media, to preserve the dignity of both the traditional institution and the judicial process. The Oyomesi reaffirmed their commitment to upholding the traditions of Oyo and expressed disappointment at the governor’s approach, urging him to respect the ongoing legal proceedings.
