President Bola Tinubu has sanctioned a new minimum wage of N70,000 for Nigerian workers, along with a commitment to reassess the national minimum wage law every three years.
This announcement followed a meeting between President Tinubu and the leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday.
Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Information and Strategy, confirmed the development in a statement on X. He emphasized that President Tinubu is also exploring ways to support the private sector and regional governments in meeting the new wage requirements.
“President Bola Tinubu has approved a N70,000 minimum wage for Nigerian workers and promised to review the national minimum wage law every three years,” Onanuga stated. He added that the announcement came during the second meeting in seven days between the President and labor leaders.
Furthermore, Onanuga mentioned that labor leaders commended President Tinubu for his “fatherly gesture.” The President also pledged to use his executive authority to resolve the issue of four months’ unpaid salaries owed to university unions.
