Rishi Sunak to Resign Following Election Defeat

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced his resignation following a devastating election loss. Addressing the nation from Downing Street, Sunak acknowledged the public’s discontent, stating, “I have heard your anger,” and confirmed he would step down once a new party leader is appointed.

The Labour Party, led by Keir Starmer, has secured a resounding victory, ending 14 years of Conservative rule. Starmer is set to meet the King this morning to formally become the new prime minister.

The election has seen significant changes across the political landscape, with high-profile Conservative figures such as former Prime Minister Liz Truss losing their seats. The Liberal Democrats have also made substantial gains, while the Scottish National Party (SNP) suffered major losses.

In his farewell address, Sunak described the UK as “the best country in the world” and reflected on the country’s unassuming greatness. He highlighted his journey to the premiership, just two generations after his grandparents’ arrival in the UK, expressing deep gratitude to his colleagues and profound thanks to his wife and daughters for their sacrifices.

Sunak then departed Downing Street, marking the end of his tenure as prime minister.
