Ruben Amorim has been named the new manager of Manchester United, following the dismissal of Erik ten Hag. The 39-year-old Portuguese coach, who secured two Primeira Liga titles with Sporting Lisbon, has agreed to a contract with United until 2027, with the option for an additional year. Amorim will officially take over on November 11, 2024, subject to work visa approval. United praised him as one of Europe’s most exciting young coaches, highlighting his achievements with Sporting, including their first league title in 19 years.
Until Amorim’s arrival during the November international break, former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue managing the team. Amorim’s first match in charge is scheduled for November 24 against Ipswich. Sporting Lisbon confirmed that United was willing to meet Amorim’s release clause of 10 million euros ($11 million), making him the club’s top target after Ten Hag’s sacking. Amorim remained reserved about the deal, stating negotiations were still underway between the two clubs.
Ten Hag was dismissed earlier this week after a 2-1 loss to West Ham left United struggling in 14th place in the Premier League. Despite winning the League Cup and FA Cup, his inconsistent results led to his departure. United, who last won the Premier League in 2013 under Sir Alex Ferguson, have cycled through several managers since then, all of whom failed to add to their 20 league titles.
Van Nistelrooy, who took over on an interim basis, expressed his commitment to improving the team’s fortunes and indicated a willingness to continue under Amorim’s leadership. He is currently preparing the squad for their upcoming match against Chelsea and remains open to discussing his future role at the club once Amorim officially joins
