The Senate has confirmed the nomination of Justice Tanko Mohammad as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).

President of the Senate, Dr Ahmad Lawan announced the confirmation on Wednesday at the plenary few minutes after Mohammad was screened by the lawmakers.

The screening started at around 11.40am and ended at exactly 1.20pm.

Justice Tanko made it clear to the Senators that if Corruption must be eradicated in the judiciary, the arm of government needed to be granted financial autonomy.

The CJN also stressed the need for an immediate amendment to Criminal Laws in the country, just as he said that it is the duty of the legislature to sanitize the society.

Justice Tanko Muhammad has been serving in that capacity as acting CJN since 25th January 2019 when the then Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen was suspended from office on alleged corrupt practices.
