Senator Opeyemi Bamidele Appointed Majority Leader as Senate Resumes from Recess

After a brief recess and Sallah break, the Senate resumed its session on Tuesday with an important announcement. Senator Opeyemi Bamidele emerged as the majority leader, as declared by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. He emphasized the significance of the Senate’s leadership, stating that it should serve as the core pillar of their activities within the chamber.

Akpabio joyfully shared the news, stating, “I am delighted to announce that, through consensus, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele will assume the role of Senate Leader. Senator Muhammed Ali Ndume will serve as the chief whip of the 10th Senate, while Senator David Umahi, with unanimous consent, will act as the deputy leader.

Additionally, Senator Lola Ashiru will serve as the deputy Senate whip.”
Continuing his welcome address, Akpabio acknowledged the prevailing challenges faced by the nation. He stressed the importance of the Senate’s role in stabilizing the country and supporting President Bola Tinubu’s administration, which has demonstrated commendable progress within its first 20 days.

“In light of this, I urge all senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as well as the entirety of the National Assembly, to work closely and collaboratively with our citizens, prioritizing their interests over personal or partisan agendas,” Akpabio emphasized.

He further emphasized the responsibility entrusted to the Senate—lawmaking, oversight functions, and representation at all levels—to shape policies and enact legislation that will bring about positive impacts in the lives of the people and instill renewed hope for a new Nigeria.

“As we resume today, let us focus on the expectations of our conscience, seeking dialogue and common ground on all issues. Together, we will work collaboratively towards a greater good that transcends partisan lines, guided by the grace of Almighty God,” concluded Akpabio.

The Senate’s session resumed with renewed determination to address national challenges and contribute to the progress of the country under the leadership of Senator Opeyemi Bamidele as the majority leader.
