Presidential election kicked off in Senegal yesterday. About 6.5 million Senegalese are registered to vote in Sunday’s presidential election which has the incumbent president Macky Sall against four other aspirants.

Polling stations were reportedly opened at 8 a.m and closed at 6 p.m, while official results will be released on Friday, with a run-off for the top two on March 24 if no one secures a majority.

After president Sall casted his vote he then used the opportunity to call on the people of Senegal not to keep hiding but come out to perform their civic responsibility. He urged them to do so in a very peaceful manner, he also reminded them that whatever will happen in Senegal in the next five years is their shot to call.

As stated in the constitution of Senegal, the winner of the presidential election will be handed a 5-year mandate to lead Senegal. Majorly the election takes place in two rounds to win in the first round, a candidate must attain a majority of 50% of votes cast plus one.
