Sokoto State Government Approves N1.2B Borehole Repairs

Despite the severe insecurity plaguing Sokoto State, the government, led by Governor Ahmad Aliyu, has awarded a contract worth N1.2 billion for the repair of 25 boreholes.

Governor Aliyu also announced the approval of a N33 billion project for the construction of the Lugu Dam.

In a video circulating online, where the governor addressed residents in Hausa, he stated, “We have awarded a contract for the repair of 25 boreholes at the cost of one billion two hundred million naira (N1,200,000,000). We have also approved the construction of the Lugu Dam at a cost of N33 billion.”

Sokoto, like several states in the Northwest, has been grappling with severe insecurity, marked by banditry and widespread poverty.

Recent reports have highlighted escalating security threats in the North-West, including banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism. In response, Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has ordered the Chief of Defence Staff and other top military officials to relocate to Sokoto State to bolster counter-insurgency efforts.

The Ministry of Defence, in a statement issued by Henshaw Ogubike, emphasized that this strategic relocation underscores the government’s determination to eliminate these threats. The decision follows public outrage over a viral video showing bandits celebrating after capturing a Nigerian military armored vehicle.

Matawalle has made it clear that the military operations in the North-West will focus on notorious terrorists such as Bello Turji and his gang. He assured that the government is fully committed to deploying all necessary resources to restore peace and security in the region.

The minister also called on residents of Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, and Kebbi states to remain vigilant and cooperate with security forces, reaffirming the government’s dedication to protecting lives and property.
