In a landmark ruling on Tuesday, the Supreme Court of Nigeria has declared Ademola Adeleke as the rightful Governor of Osun State.

This decision comes after the Independent National Electoral Commission initially declared Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party as the winner of the governorship election held on July 16, 2022.

Adeleke garnered 403,371 votes, defeating then-incumbent governor Adegboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress, who got 375,027 votes.

However, Oyetola and his party rejected the result of the poll and headed for the tribunal.

In its majority verdict on January 27, 2023, the Justice Tertse Kume-led tribunal annulled Adeleke’s victory and declared Oyetola as the winner of the poll.

This decision was overturned by the Supreme Court, which recognized Adeleke as the duly elected Governor of Osun State.

The ruling is expected to put an end to the political controversy that has surrounded the Osun governorship election for the past several months.
