The Swedish Football Association has appointed former Chelsea and West Ham manager Graham Potter as the new head coach of the national team, following the dismissal of Jon Dahl Tomasson after a disappointing World Cup qualifying run.
Tomasson was sacked on October 14 after Sweden picked up just one point from their first four qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup. The team currently sits at the bottom of Group B, having failed to score in their last three matches despite boasting attacking stars Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres.
Potter, who was dismissed by West Ham in September, is now tasked with reviving Sweden’s campaign and securing a spot at the 2026 World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico. His contract covers the remainder of the qualifying period including upcoming games against Switzerland and Slovenia and will automatically extend to the finals if Sweden qualify.
“I am very humble facing this assignment, but also incredibly inspired. Sweden has fantastic players who deliver week after week in the world’s best leagues,” the 50-year-old English coach said.
Potter is no stranger to Swedish football, having managed Ostersund FK from 2011 to 2018, leading them from the lower divisions to the top flight. His coaching journey since then has included spells with Swansea City, Brighton, Chelsea, and West Ham, where he was once considered one of England’s brightest managerial prospects.
