The Ekiti Magistrate Court was a scene of heightened security today as officers fortified the premises ahead of a crucial hearing involving human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi. The hearing, centered on a bail application, follows his arrest based on a petition filed by renowned lawyer Chief Afe Babalola (SAN). Farotimi arrived amidst a heavy presence of police and law enforcement personnel.

The case, with suit number MAD/1,476.C/2024, names the Ekiti State Commissioner of Police as the complainant against Farotimi. One of the charges accuses him of publishing claims in his book, Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System, alleging that Afe Babalola influenced the Supreme Court to secure a fraudulent judgment. The publication, which the charge describes as false and capable of causing public unrest, forms the basis of the accusations.

The court is set to rule on Farotimi’s bail application after an earlier denial on December 4, 2024. The defense has been keenly awaiting the magistrate’s decision, which could determine the next steps in the case.

Meanwhile, security at the court remains intense, with officers stationed strategically within and around the premises. The presence of armed personnel reflects the sensitivity of the case, as it continues to draw significant public attention.
