The United States has on Friday in an announcement by the office of the US Trade Representative announced support for the emergence of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as the next Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

This came as a result of the decision to withdraw from the race by the Republic of Korea’s Trade Minister, Yoo Myung-hee.

The message portrayed President Joe Biden administration’s support for Nigeria’s former Finance Minister.

Myung-hee, South Korea’s first female Trade Minister was hailed by the US government for her campaign for the and withdrawal from the position. It recognised Okonjo-Iweala’s knowledge in economics and international diplomacy from her 25 years with the World Bank.

America stated that this was the first time in history that any woman made it to the final round of consideration, congratulating both women for making it to this stage.

It says that the United States is ready to engage in the next phase of the WTO process for reaching a consensus decision on the WTO Director-General.
