Despite the prevailing difficulties, Tinubu remains resolute in his determination to leave no stone unturned in delivering on the commitments made by his administration. As the country grapples with rising petrol prices, which have further strained the cost of living, Nigerians are expressing their concerns. The removal of petrol subsidies, as stated by Tinubu during his inaugural speech, has led to an increase in fuel prices, triggering discontent among citizens.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has rejected the new petrol pump price of N617 per liter, deeming it an unnecessary burden imposed on the masses. NLC President Joe Ajaero criticizes the government’s approach and accuses the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) of misleading the public. Ajaero questions the government’s motives behind seeking court injunctions and employing other measures if they were not involved in the pricing decisions.
In response to the outcry, NNPCL’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, attributes the surge in fuel prices to market forces at play. Kyari asserts that the market value chain, influenced by demand and supply dynamics, is responsible for the fluctuating prices. While acknowledging the lack of detailed information, he states that fuel importers adjust prices based on prevailing market realities, reflecting the self-regulating nature of the market.
Addressing the concerns raised, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, appeals to Nigerians to endure the initial hardships resulting from the removal of petrol subsidies, assuring them of a brighter future ahead. Akume, expressing confidence in President Tinubu’s administration, highlights the positive impact of the government’s actions on the economy and its credibility among local and international policymakers.
