President Bola Tinubu has appointed Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria. Her formal confirmation awaits Senate approval.

The swearing-in ceremony took place on August 22, 2024, at the Council Chamber of the State House in Abuja, following the retirement of the former Chief Justice, Olukayode Ariwoola.

Ariwoola noted that he endorsed the new judicial procedures after extensive consultations with Justice Kekere-Ekun and other members of the Supreme Court, including Justices Inyang Okoro and Moronkeji Helen Ogunwumiju, as well as Senior Advocates of Nigeria, Dr. Muiz Banire and Yakubu C. Maikyau.

He highlighted concerns that the court’s procedural rules, established in 1985, had become outdated, particularly in light of advancements in information technology, electronic transactions, and global telecommunications.
