Nigeria’s sprint hurdler Tobi Amusan lit up the Diamond League meet in Rabat, Morocco, on Sunday, May 25, 2025, clinching the women’s 100m hurdles with a scorching 12.45 seconds. The 28-year-old smashed the meet record of 12.51 seconds, set by American Brianna McNeal in 2018, and hit a season’s best of 12.24 seconds. This victory, her first major win of 2025, has put the world record holder back in the spotlight as a top contender for the World Championships in Tokyo.

Amusan’s journey this year hasn’t been all smooth. She kicked off 2025 with two fourth-place finishes at the Xiamen and Shanghai Diamond League meets in May, and while she won at Jamaica’s Velocity Fest 16 in March, it was against weaker competition. After a tough 2024, where she missed the final in the 100m hurdles at the Paris Olympics, Rabat was her chance to bounce back and she didn’t disappoint.

Speaking after the race, Amusan shared her secret which was a renewed focus on technique. “I’ve been doing more sprinting, but after those first two Diamond League meets, I knew I needed to hit the hurdles hard,” she said. “Two weeks of extra hurdle drills, and you can see the difference.” With no hurdles event in Doha’s Diamond League, Rabat was the perfect stage for her comeback, and she owned it.

With this win, Amusan has now got her eyes set on Tokyo. With her speed and record-breaking performance, she’s proving she’s still a force to reckon with.
