Nigeria’s sprint queen, Tobi Amusan, has added another medal to her glittering career after clinching silver in the women’s 100m hurdles at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo on Monday.
The 28-year-old, who is the 2022 world champion and current world record holder, clocked 12.29 seconds but was edged out by Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji. The 23-year-old stormed to gold in 12.24 seconds, setting a new national record and delivering her country’s first-ever world title in the event.
American Grace Stark finished third in 12.34 seconds, while Jamaica’s Danielle Williams, the defending champion, could only manage seventh place in a stacked final.
Amusan had earlier impressed in the semi-final, winning her heat in 12.36 seconds to raise hopes of a successful title defence. But despite a strong start in the final, she was unable to hold off Kambundji’s powerful finish.
With this silver, Nigeria now has 12 medals in World Championships history, and Amusan continues to cement her legacy as one of the nation’s greatest athletes, a star defined by resilience and record-breaking feats.
