Tragic incident at Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro: student takes extreme step after losing fees to online betting

In a devastating turn of events, Samuel Adekoya, a student enrolled in the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, Ogun State, has taken his own life after losing both his own fees and those of a friend in an ill-fated online betting venture.

The shocking incident occurred on Monday, just as his fellow students were preparing for their first-semester examinations.

Samuel Adekoya, a National Diploma II student of Electrical Electronic Engineering, reportedly made the grave decision to end his life after utilizing his school fee to participate in an online betting activity on Friday, only to suffer a significant loss.

Adding to the tragedy, Adekoya had managed to deceive his roommate, gaining access to his password and subsequently wagering his friend’s fee as well, which also resulted in a loss.

It is worth noting that the institution had previously issued a stern warning that any student who failed to complete their registration would not be permitted to take the upcoming examinations.

Following his desperate act, Adekoya was promptly rushed to the school clinic for immediate medical attention. Recognizing the severity of his condition, he was subsequently transferred to a specialized hospital located outside the school premises in Ilaro. Sadly, despite the efforts made to save his life, he was pronounced dead shortly after his admission.

Sola Abiala, the Deputy Registrar in charge of Public Relations at the school, expressed his deep sorrow while confirming the incident.
Abiala revealed that the school staff acted swiftly by ensuring Adekoya’s transfer to a specialist hospital, with the hope of rescuing him.

Tragically, their efforts were in vain, as the medical professionals discovered that the late student had consumed a chemical substance, leading to his untimely demise.

The shocking loss of Samuel Adekoya serves as a poignant reminder of the potential dangers associated with online gambling and the dire consequences that can result from impulsive decisions.

The Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro community mourns the loss of a young and promising student, emphasizing the importance of providing adequate support and guidance to students facing financial and emotional challenges.
