Uber Nigeria Adjusts Fares to Support Drivers Amid Rising Fuel Costs and Inflation


Uber Nigeria, a leading e-hailing platform, has announced fare adjustments aimed at assisting drivers in coping with the recent surge in fuel prices and inflation rates. The decision reflects the company’s commitment to supporting its driver community and ensuring a sustainable operating environment.

Tope Akinwumi, Country Manager for Uber in Nigeria, emphasized the significance of drivers to the company and reiterated ongoing initiatives to make Uber the preferred app for drivers while maintaining affordable services for riders.

In response to the removal of fuel subsidies and a comprehensive review of economic conditions, Uber implemented fare updates on June 3rd and June 9th via the app. These adjustments are intended to align with the prevailing economic climate and alleviate drivers’ increasing operational expenses.

Akinwumi stated, “We firmly believe that these changes have improved drivers’ earning potential. Additionally, we reduced the service fee in February 2022 from 25% to 20% to provide drivers with better income-generating opportunities.”

Uber remains dedicated to actively engaging with drivers to gain insights into the challenges they face and foster open lines of communication. Regular roundtable discussions, surveys, and direct contact through phone and in-app channels contribute to a deeper understanding of drivers’ realities and feedback.

The company emphasized its commitment to monitoring local dynamics and implementing necessary changes accordingly.

Uber’s service fee plays a critical role in maintaining the functionality of the Uber App and supporting ongoing investments in technology enhancements, specifically tailored to meet the needs of both riders and drivers.

Uber further claimed that its platform offers drivers higher earning potential compared to other ride-hailing platforms operating in Nigeria.
